Business process management

Business process management is the discipline of modeling, governing, monitoring, and improving the linked activities through which an organization delivers products or services.

Business process modeling: The representation of business activities, decisions, roles, and flows in a process model. It makes organizational workflows explicit enough to analyze and redesign.
Business process automation: The use of technology to execute or coordinate repetitive business process activities. Automation applies process rules to routine tasks and handoffs.
Business process: A connected set of activities that transforms inputs into an outcome for a customer or organization. BPM takes these repeatable flows of work as its central subject.
Enterprise resource planning: Integrated software that manages an organization's core transactions and shared data. ERP systems support processes, but BPM is a management discipline rather than a software suite.

Business process architecture: A structured overview of an organization's processes and their relationships. It situates individual process models within the organization as a whole.
Case management: The coordination of work around individual cases whose paths depend on context and judgment. It handles less predictable work than BPM's often repeatable process flows.
Business process outsourcing: The contracting of business process activities to an external provider. Standardized processes make work easier to transfer and govern across organizational boundaries.
