Butterfly stroke

A competitive swimming stroke in which both arms recover together over the water while the legs perform a simultaneous dolphin kick. Its coordinated, undulating motion distinguishes it from alternating strokes.

Dolphin kick: A swimming kick in which both legs move together in a wave-like motion. It supplies propulsion and drives the body wave that coordinates butterfly’s arm cycle.
Swimming strokes: Distinct patterns of arm and leg movement used to propel a swimmer through water. Butterfly is one of the four strokes recognized in competitive swimming.
