Butyraldehyde

Butyraldehyde, or butanal, is a four-carbon straight-chain aldehyde with the structure CH₃CH₂CH₂CHO. It is a volatile, flammable liquid used as a chemical intermediate.

Aldehyde: An organic compound containing a carbonyl group bonded to at least one hydrogen atom. Butyraldehyde is the straight-chain four-carbon member of this functional-group family.
Butanal: The IUPAC name for the straight-chain four-carbon aldehyde CH₃CH₂CH₂CHO. Butanal is the preferred systematic name for the compound commonly called butyraldehyde.
2-Ethylhexanol: A branched eight-carbon alcohol used extensively to make plasticizers and other chemicals. Aldol condensation of butyraldehyde followed by hydrogenation produces 2-ethylhexanol.
Propionaldehyde: The common name for propanal, a straight-chain three-carbon aldehyde. It has one fewer carbon than butyraldehyde and differs in molecular formula.
Carbonyl group: A functional group consisting of a carbon atom double-bonded to oxygen. Its carbonyl carbon is bonded to hydrogen in butyraldehyde, making the compound an aldehyde.
Isobutyraldehyde: The common name for 2-methylpropanal, a branched four-carbon aldehyde. It shares butyraldehyde's molecular formula but has a branched carbon skeleton.
Polyvinyl butyral: A resin made from polyvinyl alcohol and butyraldehyde, valued for adhesion and toughness. Butyraldehyde supplies the butyral groups that help form this widely used resin.
Valeraldehyde: The common name for pentanal, a straight-chain five-carbon aldehyde. It extends the unbranched aldehyde series by one carbon beyond butyraldehyde.
Oxidation of aldehydes: The conversion of an aldehyde into a carboxylic acid or related oxidized product. Oxidation converts butyraldehyde into butanoic acid.
Butanone: A four-carbon ketone, commonly called methyl ethyl ketone, with formula C₄H₈O. Butanone has the same molecular formula but places its carbonyl group inside the chain.
