Byssus

A byssus is a bundle of strong protein threads produced by some mollusks to attach themselves to surfaces. Its threads combine flexibility with resistance to pulling and wave action.

Byssal thread: A protein filament that connects a mollusk’s body to an attachment surface. Threads make up the byssus and transmit forces from the animal to its anchor.
Bivalvia: A class of mollusks with two hinged shells, including clams, oysters, and mussels. Many byssus-producing mollusks belong to this class.
Wet adhesion: The ability of a material to adhere to a surface in the presence of water. The byssus is a natural example of durable attachment in a wet environment.
Mediterranean mussel: A marine mussel species, Mytilus galloprovincialis, native to the Mediterranean region. Its byssal attachment has been studied in relation to wave exposure and settlement.
Byssal plaque: An adhesive terminal structure that anchors a byssal thread to a surface. Plaques provide the contact point where byssal threads bond to rock or other materials.
Collagen: A family of structural proteins that form strong fibers in animals. Collagen-like proteins contribute tensile strength to many byssal threads.
Surgical adhesive: A material used to bond tissue or close wounds during medical treatment. Mussel-inspired wet adhesion is studied as a model for adhesives that work on tissue.
Zebra mussel: A small freshwater bivalve, Dreissena polymorpha, native to the Caspian and Black Sea regions. Its byssus lets it attach firmly to hard surfaces and spread as an invasive species.
Mussel foot: A muscular organ that mussels use for movement and for producing byssal threads. The foot places threads and plaques during attachment.
Tensile strength: The maximum pulling stress a material can withstand before breaking. A thread’s tensile strength helps determine how much force an attached mollusk can resist.
