Byte

A byte is a unit of digital information consisting of eight bits in most modern computing systems. It commonly represents one character or a small integer.

Bit: A bit is a binary digit that can hold one of two values, conventionally written as 0 or 1. A byte is built from eight bits, whose values together determine its contents.
Byte addressing: A memory organization in which each address identifies a distinct byte. Most modern processors and programming environments locate data through byte addresses.
File size: The amount of digital storage occupied by a file, commonly measured in bytes and larger units. File sizes count the bytes used to store file contents and metadata.
Nibble: A group of four bits, equal to half of an eight-bit byte. A nibble is the smaller bit group often used to describe parts of a byte.
Binary numeral system: A positional numeral system that represents numbers using the digits 0 and 1. Byte values are commonly interpreted as binary numbers.
Word (computer architecture): A processor's natural unit of data, whose size depends on its architecture. Words group bytes into the sizes that processors commonly handle efficiently.
Random-access memory: Computer memory that allows data to be read or written at locations in any order. Memory capacity is commonly specified as a number of bytes.
Octet: An eight-bit unit of digital information, named to specify its length unambiguously. Octet is the precise alternative when byte length might be architecture-dependent.
Character encoding: A system that maps text characters to sequences of bits. Encodings determine how bytes represent characters in stored or transmitted text.
Memory address: A numerical identifier used to locate data in a computer's memory. In byte-addressable memory, each address points to one byte.
