Byzantine hymnography

Byzantine hymnography is the composition and arrangement of liturgical poetry for worship in the Byzantine Christian tradition. Its hymns combine theological texts with melodies organized through the church’s modes and services.

Octoechos: The system of eight musical modes used to organize much Byzantine liturgical chant. Its eight-mode cycle provides a framework for assigning melodies to hymns.
