Byzantine–Norman Wars

The Byzantine–Norman Wars were a series of conflicts between the Byzantine Empire and Norman powers over southern Italy, Sicily, and Byzantine territories in the Balkans.

Norman conquest of southern Italy: The eleventh-century conquest that established Norman rule across much of southern Italy. This expansion created the first major Norman challenge to Byzantine control in Italy.
Robert Guiscard: A Norman ruler of southern Italy who invaded Byzantine territory in the Balkans. His campaigns brought the wars directly to Byzantine lands across the Adriatic.
Norman mercenaries: Norman soldiers who served as paid fighters in southern Italy before establishing independent rule. Their employment by competing powers preceded their rise as Byzantine adversaries.
Byzantine Italy: The territories and political footholds held by the Byzantine Empire in the Italian peninsula. Norman expansion dismantled the empire’s remaining mainland possessions in southern Italy.

Alexios I Komnenos: The Byzantine emperor from 1081 to 1118 who repelled Robert Guiscard’s invasion and confronted Bohemond. His reign saw the principal Balkan invasion and the settlement that checked Bohemond.
