Byzantine–Seljuk wars

A series of conflicts between the Byzantine Empire and Seljuk Turkish states over Anatolia and neighboring territories from the 11th through the 13th centuries.

Battle of Manzikert: A 1071 battle in which Seljuk forces defeated and captured Byzantine emperor Romanos IV Diogenes. The defeat weakened Byzantine control in Anatolia and opened a period of Turkish migration and conquest.
Seljuk Sultanate of Rum: A Seljuk Turkish state centered in Anatolia from the late 11th century until the 14th century. It became the principal Seljuk power confronting Byzantium in Anatolia.
Romanos IV Diogenes: Byzantine emperor from 1068 to 1071, captured by Seljuk forces after the Battle of Manzikert. His military defeat and subsequent deposition deepened the empire’s internal crisis.
Turkification of Anatolia: The long-term spread of Turkic languages, populations, and political institutions across Anatolia. Centuries of warfare and settlement shifted the region away from Byzantine political and cultural predominance.
Byzantine–Arab wars: A series of conflicts between the Byzantine Empire and Arab caliphates from the 7th through the 11th centuries. These earlier wars formed the eastern frontier setting in which Byzantine-Seljuk conflict developed.
Siege of Nicaea (1097): A 1097 siege in which Byzantine and First Crusade forces captured Nicaea from the Seljuks. Its outcome restored an important Anatolian city to Byzantine rule.
Byzantine themes: Provincial military-administrative districts of the Byzantine Empire, governed by officials responsible for local defense and administration. Their weakening reduced the empire’s capacity to defend Anatolia against Seljuk advances.
Alexios I Komnenos: Byzantine emperor from 1081 to 1118 who restored imperial power through military campaigns and diplomacy. His reign marks Byzantine recovery and renewed efforts to reclaim territory from Turkish rulers.
Byzantine Empire under the Komnenoi: The Byzantine Empire during the reigns of Alexios I, John II, and Manuel I Komnenos. Komnenian rulers recovered some territories but could not restore control over central Anatolia.
Crusades: A series of religiously sanctioned military campaigns, principally aimed at the eastern Mediterranean, from the 11th to the 13th centuries. Crusading armies crossed Anatolia and sometimes fought alongside Byzantines against Seljuk forces.
