C. H. D. Buys Ballot

C. H. D. Buys Ballot (1817–1890) was a Dutch meteorologist and chemist who formulated a rule relating wind direction to atmospheric pressure.

Heinrich Wilhelm Dove: A German physicist and meteorologist who studied winds, climate, and atmospheric circulation. Dove’s earlier account of wind and pressure influenced the rule Buys Ballot formulated.
Buys Ballot’s law: A rule relating wind direction to the position of high and low atmospheric pressure. This is the meteorological rule most closely associated with Buys Ballot.
Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute: The Dutch national institute for meteorology and climate research, founded in 1854. Buys Ballot founded and led this institute, which organized systematic Dutch observations.
