Cable-stayed bridge

A bridge whose deck is supported directly by cables running from one or more towers to points along the deck. Its cables act in tension, while the towers and deck carry compression and bending.

Stay cable: A tensioned cable connecting a bridge tower directly to its deck. These cables provide the direct support that defines the bridge type.
Suspension bridge: A bridge whose deck hangs from suspenders attached to main cables draped over towers and anchored at both ends. Its main cables carry the deck load indirectly, unlike direct tower-to-deck stays.
Millau Viaduct: A cable-stayed viaduct in southern France crossing the Tarn Valley. Its exceptionally tall piers and pylons demonstrate the system on a high viaduct.
Albert Caquot: A French engineer known for contributions to bridges, aeronautics, and structural engineering. His designs helped revive cable-stayed bridge construction in the twentieth century.
Balanced cantilever construction: A bridge-building method that extends a structure in balanced segments from a pier or tower. Cable-stayed decks are often erected segment by segment without ground falsework.
Pylon: A tall structural tower that anchors cables and transfers their forces to the foundations. The pylon carries the combined forces from the stays and deck.
Beam bridge: A bridge in which horizontal beams span between supports and carry loads mainly through bending. Beam bridges rely on repeated supports rather than cable-supported spans.
Russky Bridge: A cable-stayed bridge in Vladivostok, Russia, linking Russky Island with the mainland. Its long central span illustrates cable-stayed construction at the upper end of span lengths.
Fritz Leonhardt: A German structural engineer whose work included influential bridges and tall structures. His postwar designs advanced modern cable-stayed bridge engineering.
Bridge aerodynamics: The study of airflow forces and responses in bridges. Aerodynamic design limits wind-induced vibration in exposed, slender spans.
