Cable transport

Cable transport moves or supports vehicles using tensioned cables, usually powered by a stationary drive. It includes aerial ropeways, funicular railways, and street cable cars.

Aerial tramway: An aerial ropeway in which cabins travel back and forth on a fixed route suspended from cables. Its cabins hang from support cables while haul cables pull them between terminals.
Haul rope: A moving cable that pulls vehicles or carriers along a ropeway. It supplies the motion that carries cabins, chairs, or other carriers.
Urban gondola: A gondola lift used as public transportation within or between urban areas. It applies circulating-ropeway technology to city transit routes.
Rack railway: A railway that uses a toothed rack rail and matching locomotive gear to climb steep slopes. It replaces cable haulage with a mechanical connection between locomotive and track.
Cableway evacuation: The removal of passengers from ropeway carriers after a stoppage or emergency. Suspended cabins make rescue planning a core part of cableway operation.
Gondola lift: An aerial ropeway whose cabins detach or remain attached to a continuously circulating haul rope. It shows how a circulating cable can carry many small cabins around a loop.
Track rope: A stationary cable that supports and guides carriers on some aerial ropeways. It bears vehicle loads separately from the moving haul rope in many tramways.
Ski lift: A ropeway that carries skiers uphill, commonly using chairs, cabins, or surface tows. Ski areas use cable systems to move passengers efficiently up slopes.
Monorail: A railway whose vehicles run on or are suspended from a single rail or beam. It can provide elevated transport without relying on a moving haul cable.
Ropeway safety: The engineering, inspection, and operational practices used to reduce risks in ropeway systems. Cable failure, grip faults, and evacuation hazards demand specialized safeguards.
