Caesium iodide

Caesium iodide (CsI) is an ionic compound of caesium and iodine. Its dense, optically transparent crystals are used in scintillation detectors and infrared optical components.

Caesium: Caesium is a soft, highly reactive alkali metal with atomic number 55. Caesium supplies the Cs⁺ ions in the compound.
Scintillation detector: A scintillation detector converts ionizing radiation into light and measures that light to infer deposited energy. CsI crystals convert radiation energy into detectable flashes of light.
Scintillation: Scintillation is the emission of brief light pulses after a material absorbs ionizing radiation. CsI’s detector role depends on converting deposited radiation energy into photons.
Sodium iodide: Sodium iodide (NaI) is an ionic salt used as a scintillator, often activated with thallium. NaI(Tl) is a familiar alternative scintillator with different light yield and mechanical properties.
Robert Bunsen: Robert Bunsen was a German chemist known for spectroscopy, gas burners, and work on chemical analysis. Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff identified caesium spectroscopically, establishing the element later used in CsI.
Iodine: Iodine is a halogen with atomic number 53 that commonly forms iodide ions by gaining one electron. Iodine supplies iodide, the anion paired with Cs⁺.
Thallium-doped caesium iodide: Thallium-doped caesium iodide is a scintillator in which trace thallium activators enhance visible-light emission. This widely used CsI formulation emits strongly in a spectral range suited to photodetectors.
Photoluminescence: Photoluminescence is light emission following absorption of photons. Optical excitation reveals activator and defect states that also affect CsI scintillation.
Bismuth germanate: Bismuth germanate (BGO) is a dense inorganic scintillator composed of bismuth, germanium, and oxygen. BGO offers high stopping power but differs from CsI in light output and emission characteristics.
Gustav Kirchhoff: Gustav Kirchhoff was a German physicist whose work helped establish spectroscopy and its application to chemical analysis. Kirchhoff’s collaboration with Bunsen led to the discovery of caesium.
