Calabarzon

Calabarzon is an administrative region in the Philippines comprising Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon provinces. Its name combines the initial syllables of those five province names.

Cavite: A province in the Philippines, west of Laguna de Bay and south of Metro Manila. Cavite contributes the first syllable of Calabarzon’s name and forms its western part.
Southern Tagalog: A former administrative region of the Philippines encompassing a broad area south of Metro Manila. Calabarzon was formed from provinces formerly grouped within Southern Tagalog.
Metro Manila: The densely populated National Capital Region of the Philippines, centered on Manila. Calabarzon’s proximity to Metro Manila shapes commuting, investment, and urban growth.
Urban sprawl: The outward spread of low-density development into surrounding rural or undeveloped land. Expansion from Metro Manila has converted land across parts of Calabarzon.
Laguna: A province in the Philippines southeast of Metro Manila, named after Laguna de Bay. Laguna supplies the second syllable in the region’s name and borders the lake.
Executive Order No. 103: A 2002 Philippine executive order that divided Region IV into Calabarzon and Mimaropa. This order established Calabarzon as a separate administrative region.
South Luzon Expressway: A major toll expressway connecting Metro Manila with provinces in southern Luzon. It carries freight and commuters between the capital and Calabarzon’s urban centers.
Traffic congestion: The slowing of road traffic when vehicle demand exceeds available roadway capacity. Commuting and freight flows strain roads connecting Calabarzon with Metro Manila.
Batangas: A province in the Philippines occupying the southwestern part of Luzon. Batangas contributes the third syllable and gives the region a western coastline.
Region IV-A: The official numeric designation of Calabarzon in the Philippine regional system. Region IV-A is the administrative code used for Calabarzon.
