Calabria

Calabria is a region in southern Italy occupying the toe of the Italian peninsula, between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas. It borders Basilicata to the north and faces Sicily across the Strait of Messina.

Calabrian Apennines: The southernmost part of the Apennine mountain system, extending along Calabria. These mountains form Calabria’s rugged interior and divide its short coastal plains.
Magna Graecia: The ancient Greek settlements and cultural sphere in southern Italy and Sicily. Greek colonies along Calabria’s coasts made the region part of this world.
Calabrian cuisine: The regional food tradition of Calabria, known for ingredients such as chili peppers, pork, and citrus. Its dishes express local agriculture and a strong tradition of preserving food.
1908 Messina earthquake: A destructive earthquake and tsunami that struck the Strait of Messina region on December 28, 1908. It devastated Reggio Calabria and reshaped settlement along Calabria’s southern coast.
Strait of Messina: A narrow sea passage separating Sicily from mainland Italy. It separates Calabria’s southwestern tip from Sicily.
Locri Epizephyrii: An ancient Greek colony on the Ionian coast of Calabria, founded in the seventh century BCE. Its remains preserve evidence of Calabria’s Greek colonial past.
Calabrian chili pepper: A group of locally grown hot peppers used widely in Calabrian cooking. The pepper gives many regional sauces and cured meats their characteristic heat.

Tyrrhenian Sea: A part of the Mediterranean Sea lying west of the Italian peninsula. Its waters form Calabria’s western coastline.
Bruttii: An ancient Italic people who lived in the southwestern part of the Italian peninsula. They gave the region its Roman-era name, Bruttium.
