Calcium bromide

Calcium bromide is an ionic compound with formula CaBr₂, composed of calcium ions and bromide ions. It is highly soluble in water and is used in dense clear brines and chemical synthesis.

Clear brine fluid: A solids-free aqueous salt solution used to control pressure in wells and other industrial systems. Calcium bromide forms dense brines that provide hydrostatic pressure without suspended solids.
Ionic bonding: Chemical bonding produced by electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions. Calcium bromide consists of Ca²⁺ and Br⁻ ions held together by electrostatic forces.
Calcium: A reactive alkaline-earth metal with atomic number 20 and symbol Ca. Calcium supplies the doubly charged cation in calcium bromide.
Sodium bromide: An ionic compound of sodium and bromine with formula NaBr. It is a soluble bromide salt, but its brines are less dense than concentrated calcium bromide brines.
Drilling fluid: A fluid circulated through a borehole to transport cuttings, control pressure, and support drilling operations. Calcium bromide brines can serve as completion and workover fluids in oil and gas wells.
Calcium ion: The positively charged ion Ca²⁺, formed when a calcium atom loses two electrons. Each formula unit contains one calcium ion that balances two bromide ions.
Bromine: A reddish-brown halogen with atomic number 35 and symbol Br. Bromine supplies the atoms that become bromide ions in the compound.
Zinc bromide: An inorganic salt of zinc and bromine with formula ZnBr₂. Zinc bromide brines can reach higher densities, but zinc’s toxicity and cost affect their use.
Well completion: Operations that prepare a drilled well for production or injection. Calcium bromide brine can maintain pressure while completion equipment is installed.
Bromide: The negatively charged ion Br⁻, formed when a bromine atom gains one electron. Two bromide ions balance the +2 charge of calcium in CaBr₂.
