California Gold Rush

The mass migration to California after gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in 1848. It transformed the region and accelerated California’s admission to the United States.

Sutter’s Mill: A sawmill near Coloma, California, where James W. Marshall discovered gold in January 1848. The discovery at this site triggered the migration.
California Trail: An overland route across the western United States used by migrants traveling to California. It carried many of the overland migrants drawn by gold.
