Call and response

Call and response is a pattern in which one voice, group, or instrument presents a phrase and another answers it. The exchange may be improvised, repeated, or governed by musical and social conventions.

Antiphony: A musical practice in which groups or voices alternate in singing or speaking. Antiphony organizes call and response as an exchange between distinct groups.
Work song: A song used to coordinate, accompany, or sustain collective labor. Alternating leader and group phrases helped coordinate shared work.
