Calorimetry

Calorimetry is the experimental measurement of heat transferred during physical or chemical processes. It uses temperature changes and calibrated heat capacities to quantify energy exchange.

Calorimeter: A device that measures heat transferred in a physical or chemical process. The apparatus turns a process’s temperature change into a measured heat quantity.
Bomb calorimeter: A sealed, constant-volume instrument that measures heat released by combustion. It determines combustion energy from the temperature rise of the surrounding water.
Thermodynamic system: A specified quantity of matter or region in space chosen for thermodynamic analysis. Calorimetric calculations depend on defining which sample and surroundings exchange heat.
Joseph Black: A Scottish chemist whose studies distinguished heat capacity from latent heat. His measurements established concepts that later made quantitative calorimetry possible.
Heat capacity: The heat required to raise an object’s temperature by one degree. Its value converts the calorimeter’s temperature change into heat.
Coffee-cup calorimetry: A constant-pressure method using an insulated cup to measure heat in solution processes. It provides a simple route to reaction enthalpy from solution temperature changes.
Heat (thermodynamics): Energy transferred between systems because of a temperature difference. Calorimetry measures this transfer, not energy stored as a substance property.
Antoine Lavoisier: A French chemist who helped establish modern quantitative chemistry and studied heat with Pierre-Simon Laplace. His ice calorimeter experiments measured heat produced by respiration and combustion.
Specific heat capacity: The heat required to raise one unit of a substance’s mass by one degree. It links a sample’s temperature change and mass to heat absorbed or released.
Differential scanning calorimetry: A technique that measures the difference in heat flow to a sample and reference during temperature change. It tracks transitions such as melting and protein unfolding through heat-flow differences.
