Camera movement

Camera movement is a change in a camera’s position or orientation during a shot. It shapes spatial perspective, guides attention, and can alter a scene’s emotional tone.

Pan (camera movement): A horizontal rotation of a camera around a fixed position. A pan changes orientation while keeping the camera in place.
Camera angle: The direction and height from which a camera views a subject. Movement changes camera angle as the viewpoint shifts during a shot.
Steadicam: A camera stabilization system that allows an operator to move smoothly without a track. It enables fluid movement through locations where tracks are impractical.
Static shot: A shot in which the camera remains fixed in position and orientation. It provides the direct alternative: the frame stays still throughout the shot.
Tilt (camera movement): A vertical rotation of a camera around a fixed position. A tilt shifts the view up or down without changing camera position.
Framing (visual arts): The selection and arrangement of visible elements within an image’s boundaries. A moving camera continually changes what enters and leaves the frame.
Dolly track: A track that guides a wheeled camera dolly along a controlled path. It supports repeatable, smooth camera travel through a scene.
Zoom lens: A lens with a variable focal length that changes image magnification without moving the camera. A zoom changes framing optically, not by changing camera position.
Tracking shot: A shot in which the camera moves through space, often alongside a subject. Tracking changes camera position to follow action or reveal space.
Perspective (visual): The way spatial relationships and depth appear from a particular viewpoint. Physical movement changes perspective, unlike a simple change in framing.
