Cameroon Line

The Cameroon Line is a chain of volcanic centers extending from islands in the Gulf of Guinea across western Cameroon. It crosses both oceanic and continental crust and is notable for lacking a clear association with a conventional plate-boundary rift.

Mount Cameroon: An active volcano in western Cameroon and the highest mountain in Central and West Africa. It is the line’s largest mainland volcano and its most recently active center.
Bioko: An island in the Gulf of Guinea and part of Equatorial Guinea, dominated by volcanic terrain. Bioko is the largest island in the Cameroon Line’s offshore segment.
Central African Shear Zone: A major system of ancient faults and shear zones crossing Central Africa. Its structures have been proposed as pathways or influences on magma ascent beneath the line.
Lake Nyos disaster: A 1986 limnic eruption in Cameroon that released a lethal cloud of carbon dioxide from Lake Nyos. The lake occupies a volcanic crater in the line’s region, linking volcanism to a major natural hazard.
Mount Cameroon Volcanic Line: The continental segment of the Cameroon Line, extending through western Cameroon toward the interior. This segment shows how volcanic activity continues beyond the Gulf of Guinea islands.
São Tomé: A volcanic island in the Gulf of Guinea and the larger island of São Tomé and Príncipe. It is one of the oceanic volcanic centers along the line.
Biafra Embayment: A broad indentation of the Gulf of Guinea’s continental margin off southeastern Nigeria and western Cameroon. Its rifted margin provides tectonic context for the line’s transition from ocean to continent.
Lake Monoun disaster: A 1984 limnic eruption in Cameroon that released carbon dioxide from Lake Monoun and killed 37 people. The lake lies in the volcanic region, where dissolved magmatic gases can accumulate in deep water.
Oceanic crust: The relatively thin, dense crust forming the floors of ocean basins. The line’s island volcanoes rise through oceanic crust before it reaches the continent.
Príncipe: A volcanic island in the Gulf of Guinea and part of São Tomé and Príncipe. It is another offshore center in the chain, north of São Tomé.
