Camille Desmoulins

Camille Desmoulins (1760–1794) was a French journalist, pamphleteer, and politician whose words helped mobilize the French Revolution. A former ally of Robespierre, he was executed during the Reign of Terror.

Estates-General of 1789: An assembly of France’s three estates convened in 1789 amid a fiscal and political crisis. Its opening and the dispute over representation preceded Desmoulins’s rise as a revolutionary speaker.
Georges Danton: A French revolutionary politician and lawyer who became a leading figure in the Revolution’s early years. Danton was Desmoulins’s close friend and political ally, and both faced execution in 1794.
Pamphlet: A short printed work, often used to circulate political, religious, or social arguments. Desmoulins used pamphlets to make arguments against monarchy accessible beyond formal political debate.
Reign of Terror: A period of state repression and mass executions in revolutionary France, chiefly from 1793 to 1794. Desmoulins’s calls to end the Terror made him vulnerable to accusations of counterrevolution.
Storming of the Bastille: The seizure of the Bastille fortress and prison in Paris on 14 July 1789. Desmoulins’s speech at the Palais-Royal helped spur the crowd mobilization before the attack.
Maximilien Robespierre: A French revolutionary lawyer and politician who became a leading figure in the Committee of Public Safety. Robespierre was a longtime friend who ultimately supported the prosecution of Desmoulins.
The Old Cordelier: A newspaper founded by Camille Desmoulins in 1793 that criticized the Reign of Terror. Its calls for clemency provoked the conflict that helped bring Desmoulins to trial.
Dantonist purge: The April 1794 prosecution and execution of Georges Danton, Camille Desmoulins, and their allies. Desmoulins was condemned with the Dantonists after attacking the Committee of Public Safety’s repression.
La France libre: A political pamphlet published by Camille Desmoulins in 1789 advocating the end of royal despotism. This pamphlet established his reputation as a forceful advocate of revolutionary change.
Lucile Desmoulins: A French revolutionary figure and the wife of Camille Desmoulins, executed in 1794. Her arrest and execution followed Camille’s and became part of the same political purge.
