Camillo Golgi

Camillo Golgi (1843–1926) was an Italian physician and cytologist who developed a silver-staining method for nervous tissue and discovered the cellular structure later named the Golgi apparatus.

Santiago Ramón y Cajal: A Spanish neuroscientist who used Golgi’s stain to develop the neuron doctrine and map nervous-system circuits. Cajal made the neuron doctrine Golgi rejected central to modern neuroscience.
Golgi stain: A silver-based histological method that renders a small fraction of neurons dark and visible in their entirety. Golgi’s method revealed complete nerve-cell forms against a mostly unstained background.
Pavia: A city in northern Italy and the location of the University of Pavia. Golgi conducted much of his academic and laboratory career at the University of Pavia.
Neuron doctrine: The theory that the nervous system consists of discrete cells communicating across specialized junctions. Golgi’s reticular theory opposed the doctrine Cajal advanced using Golgi’s stain.

Golgi apparatus: A membrane-bound organelle that modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids in eukaryotic cells. This organelle was first observed by Golgi using a silver-based reaction.
University of Pavia: A public university in Pavia, Italy, founded in 1361. Golgi studied and later held professorships at this institution.
Reticular theory: The view that nervous tissue forms a continuous interconnected network rather than discrete communicating neurons. Golgi defended this account of neural structure against the neuron doctrine.
