Camphor

Camphor is a fragrant, waxy bicyclic ketone found in camphor laurel and produced synthetically. Its strong odor and volatility have made it useful in medicines, fragrances, and insect repellents.

Terpenes: Terpenes are compounds built from isoprene units, common in plants and many essential oils. Camphor is a monoterpenoid, a terpene-derived compound.
Sublimation: Sublimation is the direct transition of a solid into a gas without passing through a liquid state. Camphor slowly releases its odor as solid molecules enter the air.
Camphor laurel: Camphor laurel is an East Asian evergreen tree whose wood and leaves contain camphor-rich essential oil. It is the principal natural source traditionally associated with camphor.

Monoterpenoids: Monoterpenoids are oxygen-containing compounds derived from ten-carbon monoterpenes. Camphor belongs to this class of oxygenated terpenes.
Olfaction: Olfaction is the detection of airborne chemical molecules by the sensory system. Camphor’s vapor activates odor receptors and produces its characteristic scent.
Hoshi Pharmaceutical: Hoshi Pharmaceutical is a Japanese company historically associated with camphor production and processing. Its industrial operations formed part of Japan’s modern camphor industry.
Camphorated oil: Camphorated oil is an oil preparation containing dissolved camphor, historically used as a topical remedy. It is a familiar formulation whose ingestion can cause severe poisoning.
Eucalyptol: Eucalyptol is a bicyclic ether found in eucalyptus oil and used in flavorings and medicines. It shares a penetrating aroma with camphor but has a different functional group and structure.
