Canadian Prairies

The Canadian Prairies are the grassland region of western Canada, centered on Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Their landscapes include cultivated plains, native grasslands, and parkland.

Prairie: A temperate grassland ecosystem dominated by grasses and other herbaceous plants, often with few trees. The Canadian Prairies are a northern part of the broader prairie grassland system.
Canadian wheat production: The cultivation and processing of wheat in Canada, especially across the Prairie provinces. Wheat farming is a defining land use across large parts of the region.
Laurentide Ice Sheet: A continental ice sheet that covered much of Canada during the last glacial period. Its retreat shaped prairie landforms, drainage, and the region’s many shallow lakes.
Homestead Acts in Canada: Canadian laws that offered settlers land in western territories in exchange for residence and cultivation. Homesteading helped drive large-scale settlement and conversion of prairie grassland to farmland.

Canola: An oilseed crop developed from rapeseed varieties bred for low levels of erucic acid and glucosinolates. Canola fields are widespread across the Canadian Prairies and support major export industries.
Pleistocene glaciation: Repeated advances and retreats of ice sheets during the Pleistocene Epoch. These glacial cycles created the broad plains and soils inherited by modern prairie ecosystems.
Dust Bowl: A period of severe dust storms and agricultural collapse in the Great Plains during the 1930s. Drought and soil erosion exposed the risks of farming fragile prairie soils.
Palliser's Triangle: A semi-arid region of southern Alberta and Saskatchewan identified by John Palliser in the 19th century. Its dry grasslands shape the southern prairie landscape and its farming limits.
Cattle ranching: The raising of cattle on pasture or rangeland for beef production. Native and seeded grasslands support extensive beef production, especially in Alberta.
