Canal du Midi

A 17th-century canal in southern France linking Toulouse on the Garonne River to the Mediterranean near Sète. Its locks, reservoirs, and aqueducts made cross-country navigation possible without a sea route.

Fonserannes Locks: A flight of eight lock chambers near Béziers that raises or lowers boats over a steep change in level. This concentrated lock system demonstrates how the canal overcomes elevation changes.
Pierre-Paul Riquet: A French tax collector and engineer who planned and built the Canal du Midi. Riquet secured support, devised the water supply, and directed construction.
Canal de Garonne: A 19th-century canal connecting Toulouse with the Garonne River near Bordeaux. Together with the Canal du Midi, it completed a navigable route across southern France.
Béziers: A city in southern France near the Canal du Midi and the Orb River. Riquet’s birthplace and the location of major canal works, Béziers became closely tied to its construction.
Saint-Ferréol Dam: A 17th-century dam in the Montagne Noire that formed a reservoir supplying water to the Canal du Midi. Its stored water sustained canal levels through dry seasons.
Louis XIV: King of France from 1643 to 1715, whose government sponsored major state projects. His monarchy authorized and financed the canal as a royal infrastructure project.
Canal des Deux Mers: The combined inland water route linking the Atlantic and Mediterranean through southern France. The Canal du Midi forms its eastern section.
Sète: A Mediterranean port city in southern France at the canal’s eastern end. The canal connected inland trade to this coastal outlet.
Rigole de la Plaine: A feeder channel that carries water from the Sor River toward the Canal du Midi. It is one part of the network that conveys mountain water into the canal.
Jean-Baptiste Colbert: A French statesman who directed royal finances and economic policy under Louis XIV. Colbert backed the project as a means to strengthen commerce and royal power.
