Canal transport

Canal transport moves people or goods along artificial or improved waterways. It uses vessels and water routes shaped or maintained for navigation.

Canal lock: A chamber with gates that raises or lowers boats between stretches of water at different levels. Locks let boats overcome changes in elevation along a canal.
Grand Canal (China): A vast network of waterways in China linking northern and southern regions, developed over many centuries. Its long history shows how canals could bind distant agricultural and political centers.
Inland waterway freight transport: The movement of cargo by navigable rivers, canals, and other inland waterways. Canal freight belongs to the broader system of inland water transport.
Rail freight transport: The movement of goods by trains over railway networks. Railways often displaced canals where speed and direct routes mattered more than low-cost bulk carriage.

Barge: A flat-bottomed vessel used to carry cargo on rivers and canals. Barges carry heavy or bulky loads efficiently on canal routes.
Road freight transport: The movement of goods by motor vehicles over roads. Road transport offers flexible door-to-door delivery that fixed canal routes cannot provide.
Urbanization: The growth of cities as populations and economic activity concentrate in urban areas. Canal routes supported industrial towns and connected them to regional markets.
