Candid photography

Candid photography captures people or events in natural, unposed moments, often without subjects’ awareness or direction.

Decisive moment: A brief instant when action, expression, and composition align to make a photograph especially meaningful. Candid images often depend on recognizing and capturing this fleeting alignment.
Kodak Brownie: A low-cost box camera introduced by Eastman Kodak in 1900 for snapshot photography. Its simplicity and affordability brought informal picture-making to a broad public.
Documentary photography: Photography that records people, places, or events to describe or investigate aspects of reality. Candid images can document behavior without directing the people being recorded.
Portrait photography: Photography in which a person or group is the principal subject, often with attention to appearance or character. Portrait sessions commonly direct subjects, unlike candid work's preference for unposed moments.
Consent: Voluntary agreement to an action or use, given with relevant understanding and freedom to refuse. Whether subjects agreed to being photographed affects the ethics of candid work.
Zone focusing: A manual focusing method that sets a distance and aperture to keep a chosen range acceptably sharp. It lets photographers focus quickly without delaying a spontaneous scene.
Snapshot photography: Casual, informal photography made with simple cameras, usually to record everyday life. Candid photography grew alongside the widespread practice of taking snapshots.
Wedding photography: Photography that records a wedding ceremony and related celebrations. Photographers combine arranged portraits with candid coverage of interactions and events.
Posed photography: Photography in which subjects are arranged or directed for the camera. It makes explicit the staging that candid photography generally avoids.
Right to privacy: A legal and ethical claim to control access to personal life and information. Unposed images can expose private moments even when made in public.
