Candidiasis

Candidiasis is an infection caused by Candida yeasts, ranging from localized disease of the skin or mucous membranes to invasive infection of internal organs.

Candida albicans: A yeast species that causes most Candida infections and can grow as both yeast cells and filamentous forms. Its transition from yeast to filaments helps it invade tissue and form lesions.
Oral candidiasis: Candida infection of the mouth, often producing removable white plaques or red, sore mucosa. It is a common mucosal form, especially in people with impaired immunity or denture use.
Candida: A genus of yeasts that commonly inhabit humans and other environments; some species cause disease. Candidiasis is the disease category produced by members of this fungal genus.
Bacterial vaginosis: A vaginal condition caused by disruption of the normal microbial community and overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria. It can resemble vulvovaginal candidiasis but has a different cause and treatment.
Candida auris: An emerging Candida species that can cause severe healthcare-associated infections and resist multiple antifungal drugs. Its outbreaks and drug resistance complicate infection control and treatment.
Candida biofilm: A structured community of Candida cells embedded in a self-produced matrix on a surface. Biofilms on catheters and other devices resist antifungal drugs and host defenses.
Vulvovaginal candidiasis: Inflammation of the vulva and vagina associated with Candida overgrowth, commonly causing itching and discharge. This localized infection is common and often occurs without systemic illness.
Dimorphic fungus: A fungus capable of growing in two distinct forms, often yeast and filamentous forms. Candida albicans can change form, a trait linked to tissue interaction and disease.
Dermatophytosis: A superficial fungal infection of skin, hair, or nails caused by dermatophyte fungi. Dermatophytes cause many ring-shaped rashes that can be confused with cutaneous candidiasis.
Candida glabrata: A Candida species that causes mucosal and invasive infections and often shows reduced susceptibility to azole drugs. Its treatment challenges highlight how species identification can affect therapy.
