Canine distemper

Canine distemper is a contagious disease caused by canine distemper virus, affecting dogs and many other carnivores. It can damage the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems.

Canine distemper virus: A morbillivirus that causes canine distemper in dogs and other susceptible carnivores. This virus is the infectious agent behind every case of the disease.
Canine distemper vaccine: A vaccine that induces protective immunity against canine distemper virus. Vaccination is the primary means of preventing disease in dogs.
Serengeti lion population: A population of lions in Tanzania's Serengeti ecosystem, studied for disease and ecological change. A severe distemper outbreak in the 1990s affected lions and other carnivores there.
Rabies: A fatal viral disease that attacks the central nervous system and spreads mainly through bites. Both diseases can cause neurological signs, but rabies is caused by a different virus and spreads differently.
Neurological disorder: A condition that disrupts the structure or function of the nervous system. Distemper can leave survivors with seizures, impaired movement, or other nervous-system problems.
Morbillivirus: A genus of enveloped RNA viruses that includes measles virus and canine distemper virus. Canine distemper virus belongs to this genus and shares its basic viral biology.
Modified-live vaccine: A vaccine made from a weakened form of a pathogen that can replicate without usually causing disease. Most routine distemper vaccines use weakened virus to produce strong immunity.
Black-footed ferret: An endangered North American mustelid susceptible to canine distemper and other infectious diseases. Distemper poses a serious threat to conservation efforts for this species.
Canine parvovirus: A highly contagious viral infection in dogs that commonly causes severe gastrointestinal illness. Parvovirus can resemble distemper early, but primarily targets rapidly dividing cells in the gut and immune system.
Animal welfare: The physical and psychological well-being of animals, including their health and living conditions. Severe illness, prolonged recovery, and neurological impairment raise major welfare concerns.
