Canis Minor

Canis Minor is a small constellation in the northern sky, best known for Procyon, one of the brightest stars visible from Earth.

Procyon: Procyon is the brightest star in Canis Minor and the eighth-brightest star in the night sky. It dominates the constellation and marks the smaller dog’s neck in traditional star charts.
Winter Triangle: The Winter Triangle is an asterism formed by Sirius, Procyon, and Betelgeuse. Procyon connects Canis Minor to two conspicuous stars in neighboring constellations.
Ptolemy: Ptolemy was a Greek-Egyptian astronomer whose second-century Almagest preserved a major catalog of stars and constellations. His star catalog included Canis Minor among the 48 constellations later transmitted through European astronomy.
Procyon A: Procyon A is the bright F-type main-sequence star in the Procyon binary system. It supplies nearly all the visible light associated with Canis Minor’s brightest point.
Gomeisa: Gomeisa is the second-brightest star in Canis Minor, a hot blue-white star about 160 light-years away. Together with Procyon, it forms the constellation’s recognizable two-star outline.
Winter Hexagon: The Winter Hexagon is a large asterism linking six bright stars across the winter sky. Procyon is one of its six vertices and anchors its northern edge.
Almagest: The Almagest is Ptolemy’s influential treatise on astronomy, completed in the second century CE. It records the ancient constellation tradition that includes Canis Minor.
Procyon B: Procyon B is a white dwarf companion to Procyon A. Its faintness hides a stellar remnant within the system that dominates Canis Minor.
Orion: Orion is a prominent constellation on the celestial equator, recognizable by its three-star belt. Canis Minor lies east of Orion, whose position helps locate it in the winter sky.
Apparent Magnitude: Apparent magnitude measures how bright a celestial object appears from Earth. Procyon’s high apparent brightness is why it stands out in this otherwise faint constellation.
