Canon formation

Canon formation is the historical process through which certain works become recognized as authoritative or exemplary. It involves institutions, critics, audiences, and changing standards of value.

Literary canon: A body of literary works treated as especially authoritative, representative, or valuable. Literary canons show how selection and teaching make some works exemplary.
Alexandrian Library: An ancient research institution in Alexandria that collected and studied texts from across the Greek-speaking world. Its scholars compared, edited, and ranked texts, establishing early models of literary selection.
Matthew Arnold: A Victorian poet and critic who argued that literature could provide cultural and moral guidance. His criticism helped establish influential standards for judging and teaching literature.
Canon expansion: The addition of previously excluded works or traditions to an established canon. Expansion revises inherited selections rather than treating them as fixed.
Canon wars: Public and academic disputes over which works should represent a literary or cultural tradition. These conflicts expose disagreements about the criteria and consequences of selection.
Canonization: The process of officially recognizing a person or work as worthy of special status. The term captures formal recognition, though canon formation can also be gradual and contested.
Aristophanes of Byzantium: A Greek scholar and librarian of the Alexandrian Library known for editing and evaluating literary texts. His editorial work helped distinguish recognized classical authors from others.
F. R. Leavis: A British literary critic known for arguing that a demanding tradition of major writers sustained cultural seriousness. His proposed literary lineage shaped twentieth-century teaching and debates over value.
Canon revisionism: The reassessment of accepted canons by challenging their criteria, inclusions, or exclusions. Revisionism questions the historical judgments that produced a canon.
Cultural memory: The shared ways groups preserve and reinterpret accounts of their past. Canonical works help determine which stories remain available as cultural memory.
