A vocal composition for soloists, chorus, and instrumental accompaniment, typically comprising several sections set to a sacred or secular text.

Recitative: A vocal style that follows speech-like rhythms to deliver words, often advancing a dramatic or narrative text. It lets cantata texts unfold between more sustained musical passages.
