Canton Island

Canton Island, also called Kanton, is an atoll in Kiribati’s Phoenix Islands. Its lagoon and airfield made it a strategic Pacific stopover and a focus of competing sovereignty claims.

United Kingdom–United States condominium: A joint administration in which Britain and the United States shared sovereignty over Canton and Enderbury islands from 1939 to 1979. The condominium resolved competing claims to Canton while preserving both powers’ presence.
Canton Island Airport: An airfield on Kanton Island, built as a Pacific aviation stop and later used for military and space-tracking operations. Its runway turned the atoll into a refueling and communications station.
Pan Am Clipper: A name used for Pan American Airways’ flying boats that carried passengers on long-distance international routes. Clipper services used Canton as a Pacific stop on routes linking Hawaii and New Zealand.
Canton Island settlement: A small settlement on Kanton Island associated with its airfield, station staff, and local administration. Aviation and government operations sustained a resident community on the remote atoll.
Enderbury Island: A small atoll in Kiribati’s Phoenix Islands, south of Kanton. Britain and the United States administered Enderbury alongside Canton under their Pacific condominium.
Pan American World Airways: A major United States airline that pioneered long-distance international air travel during the twentieth century. Pan Am used Canton as a refueling stop on transpacific routes.
Transpacific flight: An aircraft journey across the Pacific Ocean between regions on opposite sides of the ocean. Canton’s position made it a useful intermediate stop for early long-distance Pacific aviation.
Phoenix Islands: A remote island group in Kiribati, spread across the central Pacific Ocean. Canton’s air and communications facilities linked the distant Phoenix Islands to international networks.
Kiribati: An island country in the central Pacific, comprising the Gilbert, Phoenix, and Line island groups. Kanton became part of Kiribati when the country gained independence in 1979.
World War II in the Pacific: The Pacific theater of the Second World War, fought between Japan and the Allied powers from 1941 to 1945. The atoll’s airfield and location gave it wartime strategic value.
