Canvas

Canvas is a durable, plain-woven fabric traditionally made from cotton or linen. Its tight weave and sturdy fibers make it useful for painting, sails, tents, and bags.

Plain weave: A woven structure in which each weft yarn passes over and under successive warp yarns. Canvas gets its characteristic gridlike structure from this simple interlacing pattern.
Canvas painting: A painting made on canvas, usually stretched across a rigid frame. Artists adopted canvas as a portable alternative to wooden panels.
Hemp: A bast fiber obtained from Cannabis plants and used to make rope and textiles. Hemp was among the strong fibers historically used for sailcloth and canvas.
Denim: A durable cotton twill fabric traditionally woven with indigo-dyed warp yarns. Denim’s diagonal twill ribs distinguish it from canvas’s plain weave.
Cotton: A soft natural fiber harvested from the seed hairs of cotton plants. Cotton is a common modern fiber for canvas, valued for availability and flexibility.
Sail: A shaped sheet that catches wind to propel a vessel. Canvas supplied durable sailcloth before synthetic fibers became widespread.
Flax: A cultivated plant whose stems yield linen fiber and whose seeds produce linseed oil. Flax supplied linen for early canvas and remains a source of painting supports.
Twill: A weave pattern characterized by diagonal ribs formed by offset interlacing. Twill offers a visibly different structure from the plain weave typical of canvas.
Linen: A textile fiber made from the stem of the flax plant. Linen canvas is valued for strength and dimensional stability.
Tent: A portable shelter made from fabric or other flexible material supported by a frame. Canvas tents use the fabric’s toughness and ability to be made in large panels.
