Cao Wei

Cao Wei was a state of the Three Kingdoms period that ruled northern China from 220 to 266 under the Cao family. Its court was founded by Cao Pi after the end of the Han dynasty.

Cao Cao: A Han dynasty warlord who controlled northern China and laid the political foundations for Cao Wei. His victories and administration made the state his son Cao Pi could establish.
Nine-rank system: A system for ranking candidates for government office, developed under Cao Wei and used by later dynasties. It organized official recruitment while giving local evaluators substantial influence.
Battle of Red Cliffs: A 208 battle in which the forces of Sun Quan and Liu Bei defeated Cao Cao’s army on the Yangtze. The defeat blocked Cao Cao from conquering the south and helped preserve the future rival states.
Shu Han: A kingdom founded by Liu Bei in southwestern China that claimed to continue the Han dynasty. Its Han legitimacy claim directly challenged Cao Wei’s claim to imperial succession.
Cao Pi: The first emperor of Cao Wei, who ended the Han dynasty and founded the state in 220. He transformed his father’s de facto rule into an imperial dynasty.
Cao Rui: The second emperor of Cao Wei, who ruled from 226 to 239. His reign tested the succession arrangements and court power established by Cao Pi.
Battle of Xiaoting: A 222–223 battle in which Sun Quan’s forces defeated Liu Bei’s invasion of Jing Province. It stabilized the eastern balance of power Cao Wei faced after its founding.
Eastern Wu: A kingdom ruled by the Sun family in southeastern China from 222 to 280. Its river defenses and southern territory prevented Cao Wei from unifying China.
End of the Han dynasty: The dissolution of Han imperial rule in 220 after decades of political fragmentation and war. Cao Pi’s accession marked the formal end of the dynasty Cao Wei replaced.
Sima Yi: A Cao Wei general and statesman whose family eventually displaced the Cao rulers. His growing authority shows how military command could shift power away from the emperor.
