Cape Floristic Region

The Cape Floristic Region is a biodiversity hotspot in southwestern South Africa, distinguished by exceptionally rich plant diversity and high endemism.

Fynbos: Fynbos is a fire-prone shrubland vegetation type of the Cape region, dominated by fine-leaved plants. This distinctive vegetation forms the region’s largest and most characteristic plant community.
Fire ecology: Fire ecology studies how fire interacts with organisms and ecosystems. Many fynbos plants depend on recurring fires for regeneration or seed release.
Gondwana: Gondwana was an ancient supercontinent that included Africa, South America, Antarctica, Australia, and India. The region’s deep plant history includes lineages with ancient Gondwanan connections.
