Cape Horn

Cape Horn is a headland on Hornos Island in Chile’s Tierra del Fuego archipelago, near the Drake Passage. It marks a major maritime route between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Drake Passage: The body of water between Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Its exposed waters immediately south of the cape make the route especially hazardous.
Westerlies: Prevailing midlatitude winds that blow from west to east. They drive strong seas and complicate westward sailing around the cape.
Willem Schouten: A Dutch navigator who rounded Cape Horn in 1616 and named it after the Dutch town of Hoorn. His expedition gave the headland its European name and demonstrated a route beyond the Strait of Magellan.
