Captain Ahab

Captain Ahab is the monomaniacal whaling captain in Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby-Dick. After the white whale maims him, he pursues it in a quest for revenge.

Herman Melville: Herman Melville was an American novelist, short-story writer, and poet, best known for Moby-Dick. Melville created Ahab and made his pursuit the novel’s central conflict.
Moby-Dick: Moby Dick is the white sperm whale pursued by Ahab in Herman Melville’s novel Moby-Dick. The whale’s encounter with Ahab becomes the grievance that organizes his quest.
Monomania: Monomania is an outdated psychiatric concept describing fixation on a single idea or subject. Ahab’s narrowing obsession gives the captain his defining psychological pattern.
Hubris: Hubris is excessive pride or self-confidence that leads a person to defy limits or invite disaster. Ahab treats his will as strong enough to confront whatever the whale represents.

Tragedy: Tragedy is a dramatic or literary form in which serious conflict leads to suffering or catastrophe. Ahab’s pursuit follows a tragic arc shaped by ambition, resistance, and ruin.
Revenge: Revenge is retaliation against someone believed to have caused injury or injustice. Ahab recasts the whale’s attack as a deliberate wrong that demands retaliation.
Starbuck: Starbuck is the first mate of the Pequod in Moby-Dick, known for his practical judgment and religious scruples. He challenges Ahab’s revenge as a betrayal of the whaling voyage’s purpose.
Starbuck’s mutiny: Starbuck’s resistance is his attempt to turn the Pequod away from Ahab’s pursuit of Moby Dick. His dissent reveals how Ahab’s command survives opposition aboard the ship.
