Captain (association football)

A player designated to represent and lead an association football team, especially in dealings with the referee and during match preparations. The captain wears an identifying armband, but has no special authority over match decisions.

Laws of the Game: The rules governing association football, maintained by the International Football Association Board. They require the captain to wear an identifying armband and set rules for the captain’s role in a penalty shoot-out.
Dino Zoff: An Italian goalkeeper who captained Italy to victory at the 1982 FIFA World Cup. His leadership as captain culminated in Italy’s World Cup-winning campaign.
Vice-captain: A team member designated to assume a captain’s responsibilities when the captain is unavailable. A vice-captain provides continuity when the designated on-field representative cannot play.
Leadership in sports: The influence athletes and coaches use to guide a sports team toward shared goals. Football captaincy is a formal player-leadership role within a wider range of team leadership.
Football referee: The match official responsible for enforcing the Laws of the Game and controlling an association football match. The captain is the team’s designated point of contact with the referee.
Carles Puyol: A Spanish defender who captained Barcelona and Spain during successful periods in the late 2000s and early 2010s. His captaincy joined forceful on-field leadership with a central role in Barcelona’s defense.
Team manager: A person responsible for a football team’s selection, tactics, and overall management. Unlike the captain, the manager directs the team from outside the field of play.
Athlete activism: Public advocacy by athletes on political, social, or cultural issues. Captains can use their public standing to speak for teammates or take positions beyond the match.
Captain's armband: An armband worn by a team captain to identify the player during a match. It visibly identifies the player who represents the side on the field.
Megan Rapinoe: An American footballer who captained the United States women's national team and won two FIFA Women's World Cups. Her captaincy illustrates how a player can represent a team publicly as well as on the pitch.
