Captaincy General of Guatemala

A Spanish colonial jurisdiction centered in Guatemala City that governed much of Central America. Its captain general combined military authority with high civil office, while the territory remained within the Viceroyalty of New Spain.

Real Audiencia of Guatemala: A high court and administrative body that exercised judicial and governmental authority in Spanish Central America. It shared governance with the captain general and gave the jurisdiction its principal appellate court.
Spanish conquest of Guatemala: The sixteenth-century campaigns through which Spain established colonial rule over the region now known as Guatemala. Conquest created the colonial territories later administered from Guatemala City.
