Capybara

The capybara is the world’s largest living rodent, native to South America. It is a semiaquatic herbivore that lives near water and commonly forms social groups.

Rodent: A mammal of the order Rodentia, characterized by a pair of continuously growing incisors in each jaw. Capybaras belong to this diverse mammal order and share its defining incisors.
Pantanal: A vast tropical wetland region spanning parts of Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay. Its waterways and grasslands provide extensive habitat for capybaras.
Guinea pig: A small domesticated South American rodent in the family Caviidae. It shares the capybara’s family but differs sharply in size and lifestyle.
Domestication: The multigenerational process by which human selection alters plants or animals for life with people. Capybaras may be tamed or kept in captivity, but that is not domestication.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever: A potentially severe tick-borne disease caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii. In parts of Brazil, capybaras and their ticks are involved in the disease’s ecological cycle.
