Carassius
Carassius is a genus of freshwater cyprinid fishes native to Eurasia. Its members include the goldfish and several species known as crucian carp.
Cyprinidae: Cyprinidae is a large family of freshwater fishes that includes carps, minnows, and their relatives. Carassius belongs to this family, whose members share key features such as pharyngeal teeth.
Goldfish: The goldfish is a domesticated freshwater fish derived from Carassius auratus. It is the genus’s best-known member and displays extensive artificial variation.
Gynogenesis: Gynogenesis is reproduction in which sperm activates an egg but usually contributes no genetic material to the offspring. Some Carassius gibelio populations reproduce this way, allowing females to produce offspring without ordinary fertilization.
Goldfish domestication: Goldfish domestication is the multigenerational breeding of Carassius auratus for ornamental traits and human use. It produced the diverse colors and body forms associated with the genus’s most familiar species.
Common carp: The common carp is a large Eurasian freshwater fish, Cyprinus carpio, widely farmed and introduced worldwide. Despite the shared name, it belongs to a different genus from crucian carp and goldfish.
Cypriniformes: Cypriniformes is an order of ray-finned fishes that includes carps, minnows, loaches, and relatives. This broader group places Carassius among related freshwater fish families.
Crucian carp: The crucian carp is a Eurasian freshwater fish in the genus Carassius. This species represents the genus’s wild, pond-dwelling forms distinct from ornamental goldfish.
Hybridogenesis: Hybridogenesis is reproduction in which one parental genome is discarded from reproductive cells and restored through mating. This reproductive strategy occurs in some hybrid Carassius lineages.
Ornamental fish: Ornamental fish are aquatic animals kept primarily for display in aquariums, ponds, or gardens. Goldfish are among the most widely kept ornamental fishes derived from Carassius.
Prussian carp–crucian carp hybrid: A Prussian carp–crucian carp hybrid is offspring produced by interbreeding Carassius gibelio and Carassius carassius. Hybridization complicates identification and species boundaries among closely related Carassius.
