Carbazole

Carbazole is an aromatic nitrogen-containing compound made of two benzene rings fused on either side of a five-membered pyrrole ring. Its rigid, electron-rich framework is used in dyes, pharmaceuticals, and organic electronic materials.

Indole: Indole is a bicyclic aromatic compound containing a benzene ring fused to a pyrrole ring. Like carbazole, it fuses benzene to a nitrogen-containing ring, but has only one benzene ring.
N-alkylation: N-alkylation replaces a hydrogen attached to nitrogen with an alkyl group. It modifies carbazole’s nitrogen while retaining its fused aromatic framework.
Carvedilol: Carvedilol is a beta blocker and alpha-1 adrenergic antagonist used to treat cardiovascular conditions. It is a pharmaceutical containing a carbazole-derived structural unit.
Heinrich Hlasiwetz: Heinrich Hlasiwetz was an Austrian chemist known for research on organic compounds and natural products. His nineteenth-century work is associated with the early isolation of carbazole from coal tar.
Phenoxazine: Phenoxazine is a fused tricyclic heterocycle containing oxygen and nitrogen atoms. It resembles carbazole’s fused architecture but includes oxygen in place of a ring carbon.
Pyrrole: Pyrrole is a five-membered aromatic ring containing one nitrogen atom. Its nitrogen-containing ring is the central component of carbazole’s fused framework.
Electrophilic aromatic substitution: Electrophilic aromatic substitution replaces a ring hydrogen with an electrophile while preserving aromaticity. Carbazole undergoes substitution on its electron-rich aromatic rings.
Carbazole dyes: Carbazole dyes are colorants whose molecular structures contain a carbazole unit. Carbazole derivatives serve as building blocks for strongly absorbing colorants.
Coal tar: Coal tar is a complex mixture of chemicals produced during the destructive distillation of coal. Carbazole was first obtained from this industrial mixture.
Acridine: Acridine is a tricyclic aromatic heterocycle with one nitrogen atom in its central ring. It has a similar fused three-ring outline but locates nitrogen differently.
