Carbon–carbon bond

A covalent bond joining two carbon atoms. It can be single, double, or triple, allowing carbon atoms to form chains, rings, and branched structures.

Covalent bond: A chemical bond formed when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons. A carbon–carbon bond is a covalent bond between two carbon atoms.
Carbon: A chemical element with atomic number 6 that forms four covalent bonds in many compounds. Its valence electrons allow carbon atoms to bond repeatedly to one another.
Alkane: A hydrocarbon containing only carbon–carbon single bonds and carbon–hydrogen bonds. Alkanes provide clear examples of compounds built from carbon–carbon single bonds.
Carbon–hydrogen bond: A covalent bond joining a carbon atom to a hydrogen atom. It is the other common bond in hydrocarbons and differs in polarity and cleavage chemistry.
Catenation: The ability of an element to form covalent bonds with atoms of the same element, creating chains or rings. Carbon–carbon bonds make carbon’s extensive catenation possible.
Sigma bond: A covalent bond formed by electron density concentrated along the axis between two nuclei. Every carbon–carbon single bond contains one sigma bond.
Valence electron: An electron in an atom’s outer shell that can participate in chemical bonding. Carbon’s four valence electrons support multiple carbon–carbon bonding patterns.
Alkene: A hydrocarbon containing at least one carbon–carbon double bond. Alkenes show how a carbon–carbon double bond changes reactivity and shape.
Carbon–oxygen bond: A covalent bond joining a carbon atom to an oxygen atom. Oxygen-containing bonds contrast with carbon–carbon bonds in polarity and typical reactivity.
Organic chemistry: The study of carbon-containing compounds, their structures, properties, reactions, and preparation. Carbon–carbon bond diversity is a foundation of organic molecular structure and synthesis.
