Kingdom of Naples : A southern Italian kingdom that existed from 1816 to 1861, ruled by the Bourbon dynasty. Its political upheavals gave the Carbonari a major base in southern Italy.
Secret society : An organization whose membership, activities, or aims are concealed from outsiders. The Carbonari used secrecy to protect members and sustain political coordination under repression.
Neapolitan Revolution of 1820 : A revolt in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies that compelled King Ferdinand I to grant a constitution in 1820. Carbonari members helped drive the uprising that briefly forced constitutional government in Naples.
Guglielmo Pepe : A Neapolitan general who led constitutional forces during the revolution of 1820 and the defense of Venice in 1848. His military leadership linked Carbonari activism with the Neapolitan constitutional revolt.
Italian unification : The political process that united most of the Italian peninsula into the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Carbonari revolts failed to unify Italy, but helped sustain the movement that eventually did.

Carboneria : The Carbonari's organizational system of local groups, ranks, ritual practices, and coded language. This internal structure connected local members while limiting what any one group knew.

Young Italy : A nationalist movement founded by Giuseppe Mazzini in 1831 to establish a united Italian republic. It arose partly as a more public, explicitly national alternative to Carbonari-style local conspiracies.
