Carboplatin

Carboplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapy drug that damages DNA and inhibits cancer-cell growth. It is used against several cancers, including ovarian and lung cancer.

Platinum-based antineoplastic: A class of cancer drugs that use platinum compounds to damage cellular DNA and suppress tumor growth. Carboplatin belongs to this drug class, whose members share platinum-mediated DNA damage.
Ovarian cancer: A group of cancers arising in the ovaries or nearby tissues, often diagnosed after disease has spread. Carboplatin is a standard component of systemic treatment for many ovarian cancers.
Alkylating agent: A chemotherapy drug that damages DNA by transferring chemical groups to DNA or other cellular molecules. Carboplatin is often grouped with alkylating agents because its DNA damage resembles their effects.
Oxaliplatin: A platinum chemotherapy drug used especially in combination treatment for colorectal cancer. It is another platinum drug, but its clinical uses and characteristic toxicities differ from carboplatin’s.
DNA crosslink: A chemical bond linking two sites in DNA, which can obstruct replication and transcription. Carboplatin forms DNA crosslinks that interfere with cancer-cell replication.
Non-small-cell lung cancer: The most common category of lung cancer, including adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Carboplatin is used in combination regimens for several forms of this lung cancer.
Pharmacokinetics: The study of how a drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and eliminated by the body. Carboplatin dosing depends strongly on how quickly the kidneys clear it from the blood.
Cisplatin hydration: Intravenous fluid administration used to reduce cisplatin-associated kidney injury. Carboplatin usually requires less intensive hydration because it is less nephrotoxic than cisplatin.
Nucleotide excision repair: A DNA repair pathway that removes bulky lesions and restores the correct DNA sequence. This pathway can remove platinum-DNA lesions and influence carboplatin sensitivity.
Small-cell lung cancer: An aggressive lung cancer characterized by small cells and rapid growth, usually linked to smoking. Carboplatin paired with etoposide is a common first-line regimen for extensive-stage disease.
