Cardinal Mazarin

Jules Mazarin (1602–1661) was an Italian-born cardinal who served as chief minister of France under Louis XIV. He advanced French power and helped negotiate the settlements that ended the Thirty Years’ War.

Louis XIV: King of France from 1643 to 1715, whose personal rule began after Mazarin’s death. Mazarin governed in Louis’s name during the king’s childhood and prepared him to rule.
French diplomacy: The conduct of France’s relations with other states through negotiation, alliances, and formal agreements. Mazarin used negotiation and shifting alliances to strengthen France against the Habsburgs.
