Knowra Caribbean Community Caribbean Community The Caribbean Community, or CARICOM, is a regional organization that promotes economic integration, foreign-policy coordination, and cooperation among Caribbean states and territories.
CARICOM Single Market and Economy : A CARICOM framework for integrating member economies through movement of goods, services, capital, and eligible people. It is the Community’s central project for turning regional economic integration into common rules and mobility.
West Indies Federation : A short-lived political federation of British Caribbean territories that existed from 1958 to 1962. Its collapse prompted renewed efforts to pursue Caribbean unity through functional cooperation.
Caribbean Public Health Agency : A regional public health institution that coordinates disease surveillance, laboratory services, and health responses across CARICOM countries. It gives the Community a shared capacity to detect and respond to cross-border health threats.
Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States : An integration organization of Eastern Caribbean states that coordinates economic, diplomatic, and judicial cooperation. The OECS pursues deeper subregional integration among a smaller group of CARICOM members.
Caribbean Court of Justice : A regional court that serves as CARICOM’s highest appellate court for participating states and interprets the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas. It adjudicates disputes over the treaty rules that underpin CARICOM integration.
Caribbean Free Trade Association : A free-trade arrangement established in 1968 among Caribbean states and territories, later succeeded by CARICOM. CARIFTA’s trade cooperation provided the immediate institutional foundation for the Community.
Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency : A regional agency that coordinates disaster preparedness, response, and recovery among participating Caribbean states. Its regional coordination supports members facing hurricanes, earthquakes, and other emergencies.
Association of Caribbean States : An organization promoting consultation and cooperation among countries and territories of the wider Caribbean Basin. The ACS covers a broader Caribbean Basin membership but does not replicate CARICOM’s integration framework.
CARICOM Secretariat : The administrative organ of CARICOM, based in Georgetown, Guyana, that supports the organization’s decision-making and programs. It coordinates the technical and administrative work behind regional decisions.
Treaty of Chaguaramas : The 1973 agreement that established the Caribbean Community and the Caribbean Common Market. This founding treaty created CARICOM and formalized the region’s post-federation integration effort.
