Carl Andre

Carl Andre (1935–2024) was an American minimalist artist whose sculptures arranged industrial materials such as metal plates, bricks, and timber in geometric forms, often directly on the floor.

Minimalism: An art movement that reduced form, material, and composition to simple, often industrial or geometric elements. Andre became a leading sculptor of this movement, stripping sculpture to material, arrangement, and space.
Floor sculpture: Sculpture placed on the floor rather than elevated on a pedestal or mounted on a wall. Many of Andre’s works occupy the floor as their primary support and display surface.
Equivalent VIII: Carl Andre’s 1966 sculpture of 120 firebricks arranged in two layers of rectangular units. Its unaltered bricks made Andre’s use of ordinary building materials especially visible.

Lever: Carl Andre’s 1966 sculpture consisting of a straight line of 137 firebricks laid on the floor. The work reduces sculpture to a long, low arrangement that redirects movement through a room.
Donald Judd: An American artist and critic associated with Minimalism and the use of specific objects. Judd’s writing and sculpture provide a close contemporary comparison for Andre’s nontraditional objects.
