Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim

Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim was a Finnish military commander and statesman who served as president of Finland from 1944 to 1946. He led Finnish forces in several wars and helped guide the country through the Second World War.

Winter War: The 1939–1940 war in which the Soviet Union invaded Finland. Mannerheim commanded Finnish forces during the Soviet invasion.
Grand Duchy of Finland: An autonomous part of the Russian Empire from 1809 until Finland’s independence in 1917. Mannerheim was born into Finland’s Swedish-speaking aristocracy while it remained under Russian rule.
